Perth County ̶ Friday, December 1 is World AIDS Day, an annual day held to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and its impact. This year, the community is asked to come together to remember, honour and celebrate people who have been lost due to HIV/AIDS and to also reflect on what we have achieved in our efforts to counter the negative effects of HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day Vigil

Everyone is invited to attend the Stratford World AIDS Day Vigil being held on Thursday, November 30, from 7-830pm at the Community of Christ church at 226 Forman Avenue in Stratford. This event is held annually and is supported by the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection.

Coffee House and Red Scarf Day

To also help mark the day, the Perth District Health Unit, Optimism Place and revel are partnering to host a coffee house in Stratford on Thursday, November 30, from 2–5 p.m., at revel, 37 Market Place in Stratford. Everyone is invited to the event, which will feature music by local artists Sarah Skinner, Janna Leduc and Emma Rouse. If you have a red scarf, wear it to the events on the 30th or find one hanging around Stratford on December 1 to help raise awareness for World Aids Day.

“This is an opportunity to show support for those living with HIV or AIDS and to raise awareness that HIV is not gone,” says Jane DeBlock, Public Health Nurse at the Perth District Health Unit. “There are still new infections all over the world in every demographic.”

The Perth District Health Unit supports education, awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS. The Health Unit’s Sexual Health Clinic offers free HIV testing. For clinic information go to our website at www.pdhu.on.ca.
