(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) - The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 213 incidents over the Victoria Day Long weekend, here are some examples:
May 18:
Police responded to a neighbour dispute at a Cramahe Township home where two tenants were arguing over a laundry room issue. Both persons were spoken to about successful adulting. No charges resulted.
A Brighton resident reported to police that she had been communicating with a male on a dating site for the past two months. He recently asked her to send $9,000 to him so that he could return from Hong Kong and sent her a cheque in the amount of $65,000 to hold for him. Upon checking, the woman discovered the cheque was fraudulent resulting in her ending her relationship with the male. No money was lost.*
A Brighton senior received a phone call earlier this month advising him that his son had been in an accident and needed money. The caller wired two payments totalling $9,000 to an 'accountant' in Winnipeg. He realized he was defrauded after eventually speaking to his son and confirming he was alright.*
An officer on general patrol on County Road 45 south of Hastings stopped a black pickup truck for speeding at 7:48 p.m. The driver, who had been drinking, was arrested and taken for further tests. These tests resulted in Jeffrey Peter TINNELLY age 27 of SCARBOROUGH, Ontario being charged with Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood and Speeding. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 6, 2018.
At 9:30 p.m. police received a report of a possible impaired driver in the ditch at the corner of Burnham Street and Telephone Road in Hamilton Township. Officers located the black SUV parked in a nearby private driveway and arrested the driver. As a result of the ensuing investigation Darryl COOK age 52 of Hamilton Township is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle and Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 20, 2018.
May 19:
At 7:22 a.m. police received information of a possible impaired driver at a business on Division Street in the Town of Cobourg. An officer located the black Ford Escape in a parking lot and commenced an investigation. The driver provided a false name to the officer and was arrested. A subsequent search of the rental vehicle resulted in the seizure of a quantity of illicit drugs. Steven Michael NASTUK age 25 of Cobourg, Ontario is charged with Obstruct Peace Officer, Fail to Comply with Recognizance (three counts), Fail to Comply with Probation Order, Traffick in Schedule 1 substance - cocaine, Possession of Schedule 1 substance - cocaine and Mischief Under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing scheduled May 22, 2018.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m. police responded to a domestic dispute at a business on Theatre Road South in Hamilton Township. As a result of the ensuing investigation police attempted to locate and arrest a 30 year old Vaughan, Ontario man who had since departed the scene. He eventually turned himself in to the Toronto Police Service where he was taken into custody by the OPP. The man was charged with two counts of Mischief Under $5,000. He was released with an impending court date in June 2018. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
May 20:
A home owner on Sanford Street in Brighton reported her home broken in to sometime between April 29 and May 19, 2018. The suspect(s) forced open a rear sunroom window and stole a quantity of jewellery, two televisions (a LG 42" TV and a Sharp Smart TV Model LC-43LB481C, Serial # LZDH6YA025544). Also reported stolen is a beige 2002 Chrysler Sebring 2-door convertible bearing Ontario Licence # BFHW296. Evidence was collected at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.*
Police received a report of a break-in sometime in the past three days at a residence on Harwood Road in Hamilton Township. Police identified and arrested two male suspects. Charged are two local area youths who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Both youths are charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime - Under $5,000 and Break and Enter a place - commit indictable offence. They were released and face an impending court date in July 2018.
Police responded to a disturbance at a Campbellford home that resulted in a youth from that household being arrested and charged with Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Assault with a Weapon, Fail to Comply with Sentence (two counts) and Fail to Comply with Recognizance. The youth, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was held for a bail hearing.
May 21:
Police attended Presqu'ile Provincial Park in response to a domestic disturbance that resulted in a 22 year old Oshawa, Ontario man being arrested and charged with Mischief Under $5,000. He was taken to the Brighton detachment and released when he was sober with a court date scheduled in July 2018. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
At 12:18 p.m. police received a complaint of a red Pontiac Pursuit travelling eastbound on Highway 401 through the Brighton area using a siren to move traffic. Officers located the vehicle and charged the 21 year old driver from California Settlement, New Brunswick with Have a siren contrary to section 75(6) of the Highway Traffic Act.
Shortly after 4:00 p.m. an officer stopped a black sedan for speeding on King Street East in Colborne. The driver, who showed signs of impairment, was arrested and taken for further tests. As a result of these tests, Brandon Tyler WOOD age 25 of Belleville, Ontario is charged with Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brighton on July 3, 2018.
Northumberland OPP officers investigated fourteen accidental 9-1-1 calls, fourteen motor vehicle collisions, 66 traffic related complaints and conducted eight RIDE programs over the weekend.
