(HURON COUNTY, ON) - The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment is extremely fortunate to have one of the finest and most respected OPP Auxiliary Units in the province. With that being said, some members have moved on to new opportunities including policing careers. Thus, the Huron OPP Auxiliary Unit is looking to find new members to add to their outstanding team.

What is an Auxiliary Constable? And what would I do?

Auxiliary members must be at least 18 years of age and be either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. Auxiliary members must hold a valid class "G" driver's licence or higher with no more than 6 demerit points. Additionally, members must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent along with their Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (level C) CPR courses.

Auxiliary duties often include patrols with regular members and assisting with community events such as parades, bicycle rodeos, RIDE initiatives, safety displays, presentations, victim assistance and ceremonial duties.

"The Auxiliary program, allows for those that qualify, an amazing opportunity to engage directly in Huron County communities through representing the OPP at food drives, fall fairs, special events as well as serving alongside frontline constables in regular patrols, marine duty and much more. Having served 8 years myself as an Auxiliary officer, I would highly recommend it to anyone that has that desire to give back and volunteer in their community, as well as for those that are considering a career in policing."

- Huron County OPP Auxiliary Staff Sergeant David GAGNE

Being a volunteer with the OPP Auxiliary is exciting and challenging. Every month, you will spend a minimum of 10 hours on patrol with a regular member or at community events and six hours of training. You will work in a structured environment and are expected to maintain the high standards of the OPP, sometimes in very difficult situations. Although 10 hours is the minimum amount of hours, some Auxiliary members enjoy it so much they often double or triple the amount of required hours.

Interested candidates are encouraged to visit www.opp.ca and review the section related to the Auxiliary Officer Program. Downloadable Applications can be found there, alternatively they are available at any OPP Detachment.

Successful candidates will attend a seven day recruit orientation course at the OPP Headquarters in Orillia, ON. Topics include powers of arrest, first aid, OPP policy and procedures, radio training, note-taking, self-defence, traffic and firearms training.

Don't delay; submit your application today at any of the Huron County OPP Detachments ATTN: Auxiliary Staff Sergeant GAGNE, Huron County OPP Auxiliary Unit. Emailed applications will not be accepted.

The Huron OPP Auxiliary Unit is tentatively looking at interviewing potential candidates toward the end of October.
