(GODERICH, ON) - "If you see something, say something", a catchy saying indeed but it's much more than that, it is an effective crime prevention strategy. By being alert and reporting suspicious activity to police you can protect your family, neighbors, and community.

A great example of this occurred this week in the Town of Goderich. Just after 8:00 a.m. on October 29, 2018 Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a Hincks Street resident regarding an unfamiliar high end luxury vehicle that had been parked suspiciously in the neighbourhood. A check on the licence plate revealed the vehicle was in fact stolen from Peel Region.

Prior to police arrival a male driver took off in the stolen vehicle, a 2007 Bentley. A Huron OPP officer spotted the vehicle shortly thereafter racing dangerously through a busy intersection at the corner of Britannia Road and South Street. The driver eluded police for the time being however later that morning police received a call from an employee of a Regent Street business that reported someone had abandoned the Bentley in the company parking lot.

Officers quickly attended the scene, secured the stolen vehicle and started searching for a male suspect. As a result of further investigation police were led to a residence in Goderich where they located and arrested their suspect. Police also learned the male was responsible for a theft of fuel in Woodstock two days prior.

Brian HIMES, 26 years of age from Mississauga has been charged with the following offences:
Possession of Stolen Property Over $5,000
Possession of Stolen Property Under $5,000
Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Theft Under $5,000
Drive Motor Vehicle No Licence
Fail to Comply with Probation Order - 4 Counts

He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for November 26, 2018 at the Ontario Court of Justice - Goderich.

Whether you are going to work, school, the arena, grocery store, or the gas station, it can be very easy to overlook these routine moments, however, if you see something that isn't quite right please say something.

To report suspicious activity please contact Huron OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and describe specifically what you observed, including:

Who or what you saw;
When you saw it;
Where it occurred; and
Why it's suspicious.

If there is an emergency, call 9-1-1
