22 Year Old From Owen Sound Facing Drunk Driving Charge

(SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) - On November 16, 2018 at 11:44 p.m. Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 6 south of Wiarton. The motor vehicle was travelling northbound on Highway 6 at high rates of speed and tailgating. Police located the motor vehicle and conducted a road-side screening breath test on the driver. The result of the test was a "Fail" on the approved road-side screening device. The driver was arrested for driving with more than 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol in his blood.

Police transported the accused to the Bruce Peninsula OPP detachment in Wiarton to complete a breath test. The results of the two suitable breath samples were over the legal limit of 80 mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of blood.

22-year-old male, John HIPWELL of Owen Sound was charged with the following:

Drive with more than 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, section 253(b) of Criminal Code of Canada
Novice driver - Blood Alcohol Concentration above zero, section 44.1(3) of Highway Traffic Act


The accused's driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days on an Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and his vehicle impounded for 7 days as a result of the charges. The accused was released on a Promise to Appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on December 6, 2018.
