(NORTHERN BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) - On September 12, 2020 at 9:35 a.m. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) followed a (black) pick-up truck into a private driveway to initiate a traffic stop, just off of Highway 6, near Ferndale, in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula.

Officers briefly spoke with the driver regarding the attached licence plates, as they did not belong on this truck. The driver was originally cooperative with officers but then got back into the truck and accelerated away at a high rate of speed, spinning rocks and gravel at the cruiser as he sped away, through a ditch at the end of the laneway and back onto the highway.

Officers located this same driver and the involved truck parked at another residence nearby in the Village of Lions Head. The driver was arrested for several offences, including an outstanding Warrant from an unrelated incident.

As a result of this investigation, Grey Bruce OPP have charged Matthew WEILER, 45 years-of-age, from South Bruce Peninsula with the following offences:

Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, section 320.13(1) Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
Flight from peace officer, section 320.17 CC
Drive motor vehicle - no licence, section 32(1) Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
Use plates not authorized for vehicle, section 12(1)(d) HTA
Operate a motor vehicle without insurance, section 2(1)(a) Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

The accused has been released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on November 19, 2020.

Anyone with information on this investigation can call Grey Bruce OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a secure web-tip at www.cstip.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
