Man arrested after assault at party
A Hamilton man has been arrested after another man was beaten until losing consciousness at a Guelph party last month.

Just after 12:30 a.m. February 4, emergency services were called to a residence near Dublin Street North and Durham Street. Investigation revealed two males were attending a party and became involved in a verbal altercation. The males went outside where the dispute became physical.

A 17-year-old Guelph boy was punched several times and lost consciousness. He was transported to hospital for treatment of head injuries.

On Tuesday a 22-year-old Hamilton man turned himself in and was arrested for assault causing bodily harm. He will appear in court May 3.

Two seniors scammed out of thousands
The Guelph Police Service is reminding residents to be very cautious when dealing with unknown individuals after two seniors were scammed out of thousands of dollars in separate incidents Tuesday.

In both cases, residents in their 80s reported they received phone calls from someone they believed was their grandson who claimed they had been involved in collisions and injured their noses, which is why they sounded different. Both victims reported the phone was then passed to another person – one claiming to be a lawyer, the other a police officer – who explained their “grandson” needed to come up with cash to secure their release from jail.

In both cases arrangements were made for someone to attend the victim’s residence to collect the cash. One victim handed over $8,000 and the other $6,000.

One described the person who collected the cash as a black male in his early 20s, 5’6” to 5’10” with a slim build. The other reported he handed the cash to a black male and female with dreadlocks who arrived in an older-model grey sedan — possibly a Toyota — with tinted windows. At this time it is unknown if the incidents are related.

The Guelph Police Service reminds residents to be cautious when dealing with people on the telephone, even if you believe you know who you are talking to.

Never send or give money to people you are not sure you know
Take the time to verify the story
If the story involves a loved one, try to contact that person on your own or ask questions only they would be able to answer
Never volunteer personal information to callers
Second man arrested in repeated break-in
A second Guelph man has been arrested following repeated break-ins to an apartment building near downtown.

Police were called Monday morning to the building on Gordon Street near James Street. Video surveillance showed three males entering the building’s workshop late Sunday and early Monday, ultimately leaving with a quantity of tools.

One of the involved males was located downtown later Monday and arrested. A search revealed some of the stolen property. A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, theft under $5,000 and possessing stolen property.

On Tuesday a second involved man was also located downtown and arrested. A 49-year-old is charged with break and enter. Both will appear in court May 7.

Total calls for service in the last 24 hours – 172
