Knife pulled on mall staff
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after an employee at a downtown mall had a knife pulled on him Wednesday.

Shortly after 8 a.m. two males were observed on camera inside Old Quebec Street Shoppes and one was seen writing on a wall with a marker. A mall employee approached the pair and after a brief interaction one of the males removed a knife from his pocket and began waving it around while threatening to stab the employee.

Both males left the mall and were seen walking southbound on Wyndham Street North. Officers recognized the males from surveillance video but were not able to locate them. The investigation is ongoing.

House entered while owners on vacation
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a west-end home was entered while the owners were on vacation.

Wednesday morning, police were called to a home near Willow Road and Ferman Drive. The owners had returned from vacation to find their rear door had been kicked in and a gate damaged to provide access to the backyard. A quantity of cash and jewelry was missing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Dakota Dakins at 519-824-1212, ext. 7277, email him at ddakins@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Impaired charge following traffic stop
A Guelph man faces an impaired driving charge after a passerby reported a male passed out at an intersection.

Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday a witness reported a driver passed out in his vehicle at Imperial Road North and Speedvale Avenue West. The driver woke up and left before officers arrived, but one of the responding officers spotted the vehicle turning onto the Hanlon Expressway and pulled it over.

The driver had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 45-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court April 16.

The Guelph Police Service encourages the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

Third youth arrested for breaking into former restaurant
A third youth has been arrested for breaking into a vacant south-end business earlier this year.

The evening of January 29, police were called to the former Fionn MacCool’s location on Edinburgh Road South after a witness saw two males smashing the glass doors and going inside.

Video surveillance from other nearby businesses showed four youths entering the building. Officers observed fresh red spray paint inside the building and numerous pop cans throughout.

On Wednesday a 16-year-old Guelph boy was arrested for break, enter and mischief. Two 13-year-old boys from Guelph were earlier arrested and face the same charge. All have been released with upcoming court dates.
