Northumberland Weekend Update

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to and investigated a number of incidents of the weekend.
On February 28, 2025, at around 7:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch on County Road 64 in the Municipality of Brighton. Officers located an unoccupied passenger vehicle and through further investigation, spoke to the owner at their residence. OPP entered into an impaired operation investigation and an officer made an Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand which was complied with. With the result, the accused was taken into custody and transported to a local detachment for further tests. There were no other vehicles involved and no injuries reported.
Joaquim DE ARAUJO, 56-years-old, from the Municipality of Brighton, has been charged with:
– Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
– Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
In addition to a future court date, a further 90-day Administrative Driver Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impound was initiated as per statute.
On March 1, 2025, at approximately 9:00 a.m., OPP received a report regarding a stolen vehicle taken from an address on Daley Drive in the Municipality of Trent Hills. The complainant believed a person who they share the residence with took the passenger vehicle earlier that morning. Police began an investigation and a person was sought in connection to the incident.
On March 3, 2025, the accused was arrested by a nearby municipal police service and custody was transferred to the OPP. The stolen vehicle was also recovered.
As a result, a 46-year-old male of no fixed address, has been charged with:
– Theft of motor vehicle
– Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
– Fail to comply with probation order
– Theft under $5000
– Driving while under suspension.
The accused was held for bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg. They shall not be named to protect the identity of the complainant.
On March 3, 2025, shortly before 10:00 a.m., an officer was on patrol on John Street in the Municipality of Brighton, when they received an alert from the in car Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) regarding an expired permit. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was found to be prohibited from driving.
Ryan KNITTEL, 41-years-old, from Trenton, has been charged with:
– Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
– Driving while under suspension – three counts
– Drive motor vehicle – no licence
– Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
– Fail to surrender insurance card.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg at a future date. They also had their vehicle impounded for 45 days.
Since Friday, Northumberland OPP has issued 29 offence notices for speeding. Penalties for this are more than just a fine as they also included demerit points. Speeding reduces reaction time, increases crash severity and puts everyone on the road in danger. We continue to urge people to slow down and obey the speed limits. Northumberland OPP will continue with patrol an enforcement in an effort to keep roads safe.
