Arrest after man detained, assaulted with machete
A Guelph man faces several charges after another man was detained in a downtown apartment, assaulted with a machete and threatened.

On Tuesday the victim reported the incident, which happened the afternoon of February 26. That day he was confronted downtown by another man over an outstanding debt and taken to an apartment, where he was struck in the face and had a machete held to his throat. He was also cut on the leg with the weapon.

The victim did not report the incident at the time, but came forward after receiving a threatening phone call from the other man on Tuesday.

A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested downtown early Wednesday morning. He resisted arrest and at the police station kicked an officer in the leg. He is charged with several assault, weapons and threatening charges and was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Attempt break-in at business
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after an attempted break-in at an east-end business.

Just before 7 a.m. Tuesday, the owner of a business near Elizabeth Street and Victoria Road South arrived to find broken windows. Security video showed a male approaching the business just after 5 a.m. and throwing a rock through the window. He attempted to reach in and unlatch the door but when that was not successful he broke a second window by punching it and left the area. Damage was estimated at $600.

The suspect was described as a white male with a medium to large build and wearing a black puffy jacket with white triangular logo on the left shoulder and left chest, a blue hoodie, dark grey or black pants, a face mask, white heavy-duty work gloves and an orange toque.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Caitlin Robinson at 519-824-1212, ext. 7604, email crobinson@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Two afternoon impaired arrests
Two men face impaired driving charges following separate incidents Tuesday afternoon.

Approximately 2:30 p.m. police were notified of a possible impaired driver near Gordon Street and Wellington Street. A witness had observed a man drinking a bottle of alcohol in a park, then getting in his car and driving away. He was driving erratically and almost hit the complainant’s car.

Officers located the driver at home a few minutes later and could smell alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 71-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Just before 5 p.m. police were dispatched to a business in the south end for reports of a man sleeping in a car which was blocking the driveway. Officers arrived and found the man still asleep, with the car running and the transmission in the Drive position. They awoke the man, who was confused and slurring his speech and had dilated pupils.

An officer opened the door to turn off the vehicle and observed a pipe in the driver’s door handle. The man was arrested and transported to the police station, where a trained expert concluded his ability to drive was impaired by drugs.

A 37-year-old Cambridge man is charged with impaired driving. When he was released from custody the man was angry and punched the side mirror off a vehicle parked outside the police station. He was re-arrested for mischief under $5,000.

Both men had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
